NEW LONDON, Conn. — No. 9 Massachusetts Institute of Technology finds itself with a strong grip on first place following the opening afternoon of the 2026 NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Championships.
The Engineers took the top spot in all five events on the day, taking the top two spots once, while Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Coast Guard had two runners-up apiece. Highlighting MIT's day was a NEWMAC meet record performance in the 10,000 meters by
Owen Sondag, whose winning time of 30:48.91 broke the former 15-year-old standard.

Ethan Ramirez leads the decathlon field with 3,097 points after wins in the 100 meters and long jump. Behind him is
Jeffrey Gao of Springfield, who won the shot put to supplement his 2,801 points.
