No. 1 Babson and No. 2 MIT Punch Ticket to NEWMAC Men's Tennis Championship

Match 1: No. 1 Babson 4, No. 4 Clark 0 

BABSON PARK, Mass.
— First-year Max Lidman won matches in both singles and doubles without giving up a game as top-seeded and No. 12 Babson College cruised past fourth-seeded Clark University, 4-0, in a NEWMAC men's tennis tournament semifinal Friday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Courts.
 
With its sixth straight win, Babson improves to 17-4 on the season, tied for the second-most wins in program history. The defending champion Beavers advance to the NEWMAC Tournament final for the fourth straight season and 12th time in the last 13 tries. Clark sees its season end with a 14-6 record.
 
The Green and White captured a pair of doubles wins to claim the first team point, and got singles wins from sophomore Edward Wang and first-years Sourish Gadhi and Lidman to secure the team victory.
 
Lidman and junior Louis Bourn started things off with a 6-0 victory over first-years Ved Rao and Benjamin Liu at number three, and Wang and sophomore Sebastian Mendoza clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 verdict over sophomore Ziad Tabbara and junior Aris Kirkorian. The number one doubles match between Babson senior Alexander Merson and first-year Maxim Zlobinsky and Clark seniors Edward Shepherd-Johnson and Graham Russo was tied at 5-5 in the first set when the point was clinched.

Gadhi breezed past sophomore Ethan Montane at number six singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Gadhi had little trouble with Liu at number five, 6-0, 6-1. The deciding point came when Wang posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tabbara at number two.
 
Merson won the first set over Shepherd at number one singles and was down 3-2 in the second set when the match was stopped. Mendoza took the first set over Russo at number four before trailing 2-1 in the second set, and Kirkorian won a first-set tie-breaker against Zlobinsky and was leading in the second set at number three, 7-6 (8-6), 2-1.
 
The Beavers will host second-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC championship match on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Babson Tennis Courts.

Match 2: No. 2 MIT 4, No. 3 Springfield 0
 

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's tennis team will advance to the program's 26th NEWMAC Tournament Championship with a 4-0 win over Springfield on Friday afternoon on the DuPont Tennis Courts. 

Tyler Li and Hunter Liao earned a 6-3 win over Tim Norin and Ethan Gomulka in No. 1 singles and Grant Gallagher and Rushil Patel followed with a 6-0 win over Marc Villanueva and Austin Prendiville. 

Liam Huppke and Angelo Guzman held a 4-3 lead over Jeremy Yu and Nicholas Liu in No. 3 doubles. 

Liao took on Angelo Guzman and earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles. Gallagher took a 6-2, 6-1 win over Villanueva in three singles, and Yu defeated Gomulka 6-3, 6-2 in five singles. 

Li held a 6-3, 4-2 advantage over Prendiville in the second court, while Patel had a 6-2, 5-1 against Huppke in the fourth court. 

Youngwoo Tahk took the first set 6-2 over Phakin Thongbooncharoen, and the second set was tied at four in the sixth position. 

The Engineers will face Babson in the NEWMAC Championship on Sunday, April 24, at 12:00 PM on the Babson Tennis Courts.
