WELLESLEY, Mass. -Â Junior
Kate Sanderson (West Hartford, Conn.) of MIT won the individual title at the 2024 NEWMAC Women’s Cross Country Championship held at Nehoiden Golf Club on Saturday.Â
MIT won their 17
th consecutive team title. The six-kilometer championship was hosted by Wellesley College on a perfect race day with overcast skies and temps in the low 50s. MIT registered a winning score of 16 points and possessed five of the top six finishers to capture its 19th NEWMAC championship in program history.Â
United States Coast Guard Academy finished as the runner-up with 65 points, while Smith placed third with a score of 95 points.Â
Mount Holyoke College finished with 168 points in fourth place, followed by fifth-place Wellesley College with 176 points. Springfield College delivered a score of 203 points, while Babson College came in seventh with 207 points, followed by Clark University in eighth with 208 points. Salve Regina University claimed ninth place with a score of 237 points, followed by Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 10
th with 258 points. Emerson College placed 11
th with 265 points, while Wheaton College rounded out the field in 12
th with 267 points.Â
Sanderson registered the winning time in 21:40.2 with a 5:48.6 mile pace and was named the NEWMAC Athlete of the Year following the race.Â
Junior
Lexi Fernandez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) was the runner-up finisher representing MIT with a time of 21:45.3. MIT senior
Christina Crow (Sr., Mercer Island, Wash.) placed third clocking in with a time of 21:54.3. Graduate
Gillian Roeder (Delmar, N.Y.) came away with fourth place in 21:56.2 to give MIT the top-4 finishers. Coast Guard junior
Claire Semerod (Centennial, Colo.) rounded out the top five producing a time of 21:57.3.
Ava Hartman (New Orleans, La.) of MIT was named the 2024 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year after placing 11
th overall with a time of 22:13.6. Hartman is the 14
th athlete from MIT to receive Rookie of the Year accolades.Â
The top 19 finishers earned NEWMAC All-Conference accolades.
