NEWMAC Announces Women's Track & Field 25-Year Anniversary Team

WESTWOOD, Mass. - The NEWMAC is excited to announce the Women’s Track and Field 25-Year All-NEWMAC Team, in recognition of the historic 25th Anniversary season. A total of 36 student-athletes have been recognized, as announced by the conference office on Friday. The honored team was voted on by the membership.

A total of six institutions were represented on the team, with Wheaton leading the way with 18 honorees. Next was MIT with nine, followed by WPI with four and Springfield with three. Babson and Smith rounded out the team with one selection a piece.

The team features 19 Track or Field Athlete of the Year honorees, six of which were multi-year recipients. Combined, the group earned a total of 170 first team All-NEWMAC nods. There are 23 All-American performers within the group. Additionally, 12 NCAA National Champions make an appearance on the team.

Wheaton’s Paul Souza was voted as the top coach from the past 25 years. He was a seven-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year, as well as a two-time NEW-8 Coach of the Year honoree. Under his direction, the Lyons became the first NCAA Division III program to sweep the indoor and outdoor national titles three straight years (2001-03). Souza retired in 2011 after 17 years with Wheaton.

Voters were asked to rank student-athletes and were not allowed to vote for members or coaches from their own institution. To be eligible for the 25th anniversary team, student-athletes must have been recognized on the NEWMAC First-Team All-Conference team at least twice, and/or earned Player of the Year honors.
