ORLANDO, Fla.—Babson College sophomore Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded a three-set quarterfinal win in singles and teamed with first-year Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) for a quarterfinal victory in doubles at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Soffer, who is the top seed in the singles draw, outlasted fifth-seeded Hannah Kassaie of Case Western Reserve University 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to Sunday's semifinals. Trailing 3-2 in the opening set, Soffer won four unanswered games for a 1-0 lead.
Kassaie jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and then recorded her second service break of the set after Soffer had closed within 5-4 to extend the match. Soffer took advantage of her first break point for a 2-1 lead early in the third and scored eight straight points on her serve to extend the margin to 4-2.
Kassaie held serve twice to get within 5-4 but Soffer closed out the match with four straight points to become the first female in school history to advance to the semifinals of the singles championship.
The Beavers' success continued in the afternoon as Soffer and Cristiani defeated third-seeded Emily Kantrovitz and Ana Cristina Perez of Emory University, 6-3, 6-1. Both teams held serve over the first six games before Soffer and Cristiani took advantage of back-to-back double faults for a break to go up 4-3 on the way to building a one-set lead.
Kantrovitz and Perez got within 2-1 in the second set thanks to a service break before Soffer and Cristiani responded by winning four consecutive games to close out the match.
Soffer will face fourth-seeded Eleni Lazaridou of Kenyon College in a semifinal match starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, which will be followed by Babson's doubles semifinal against Lauren Rha and Nina Ye of Pomona-Pitzer at 12 p.m.
