GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore
Roderick Huang (Cupertino, Calif.) of the MIT men's swimming and diving team was named the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for the 2023 Swimming and Diving Championships. This is the first time a student-athlete from the men's team has earned the Elite 90 and just the second time an MIT swimmer has won the award. Huang joins
Margaret Guo '16 as the only Engineer swimmer to garner the prestigious accolade.
This marks the 21st Elite 90 Award for MIT as the Engineers rank second all-time across all divisions as Stanford leads the way with 28.
Huang, majoring in mathematics and computer science, currently posts a 5.0 GPA and is a two-time All-American. He was presented the award before the day three prelims of the Championships.
This season, in addition to qualifying for NCAAs, he won both the 200-breast and 400 IM at the NEWMAC Championships and finished second in the 200 IM.
Huang is a CSCAA First Team Scholar All-American and was named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team this season. He was a Verizon product development intern and took part in the MIT Deep Learning Research where he studied normalizing flow. He is also a member of the AI Club and the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament Club.
The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above academically who have participated in a sport for at least two years with their school. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
