WESTWOOD, Mass. – The NEWMAC has announced the 2022-23 Men's Swimming and Diving major award honorees following the championship last weekend. All awards were voted on by the head swimming and diving coaches.
After leading the Babson Beavers to their best finish at the NEWMAC Championships in over two decades landing in third place, Babson has been voted as the Coaching Staff of the Year for men's swimming. Under the leadership of head coach Eric Thurston, joined by assistants, Ben Johnson, Morgan Hill, Jess Nava and Maureen Hebert the Beavers finished the championship with 725 points.
For men's diving, Springfield was honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year, led by head coach Pete Avdoulos alongside assistant coach, Annemarie Van Langen. The Pride took 2nd and 3rd place by Luca Brashear and Sean Andrews in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Boards. The coaching staff produced the most divers of any other competing institution in both finals.
Announced on the final evening of the championship, the MIT Engineers swept the major awards of Swimmer, Diver and Rookie of the Year. Tobe Obochi was voted as the Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive year while David Benko was named the Diver of the Year following two first place finishes on the 1-Meter and 3-Meter boards. Engineers first year, Cole Firlie was voted as the Rookie of the Year. MIT charged their 14th consecutive and 17th overall NEWMAC title last weekend.
