NEWMAC Recognizes 2026 Men's Track & Field Major Awards and All-Conference Team

Marlborough, Mass.- Following the 2026 NEWMAC Men’s Track and Field Championship on April 25, the NEWMAC released its major awards and all-conference teams. The Men’s Track and Field All-Conference Team consists of a first team and a second team, determined by student-athletes' finishes at the event, with first-place performances earning first-team all-conference honors and second-place finishes earning second-team all-conference accolades. The Track Athlete, Field Athlete, Rookie, and Coaching Staff of the Year were voted on by the six head coaches following the NEWMAC Championship.  
 
Track Athlete of the Meet- Alex Cole (Sr.), WPI

Alex Cole (Weymouth, Mass.) repeated as conference champion in the 100m dash, setting a new school record of 10.41, which sits at No. 13 in the country. He followed that up with a second-place finish in the 200m (21.60) and anchored the second-place 4x100m relay, contributing 20 points to the team's second-place finish. 
 
Field Athlete of the Meet- Sean Huckleberry (Sr.), MIT

Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) took wins in both the men’s Triple Jump and Long Jump, his first time as a double-winner at the NEWMAC Championship. He contributed 20 points to the MIT team’s overall win, tied for the most scored by anyone on the squad. He added Long Jump into his repertoire just this winter to prepare for these championships, and his hard work paid off with a personal record of 7.10m at the meet, his first time over 7m. Huckleberry is also currently 15th in the NCAA in the Triple Jump.

Rookie of the Meet- Josy Brown Wright (Fy.), Wheaton College

First year Josy Brown Wright (Sharon, Mass.) posted a winning time of 21.54 in the 200 meters to become the first Wheaton track & field athlete to win a NEWMAC crown in an individual track event since 2012. 

Laurels of Academic Excellence- Patrick Haertel (Sr.), MIT 

Senior Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.) boasts a 4.00 GPA as an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science major. 
 
Coaching Staff of the Year- MIT

The MIT men's track and field team won its 24th all-time NEWMAC title with 253 points at the 2026 NEWMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The coaching staff is led by head coach Julie Heyde, along with associate head coach Todd Linder. The staff also includes assistants Riley MaconBen Waruch, Liam AckermanWhitney MaconHannah JacksonAlexis Boykin, Christina Crow, Olivia Dias, Ziyad Hassan, and Walter Truitt.

The NEWMAC is an association of 13 selective academic institutions: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Saint Anselm College (beginning reclassification process with NCAA in 2027-28), Salve Regina University, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, that are committed to providing high quality competitive athletic opportunities for student-athletes within an educational and respectful environment that embodies the NCAA Division III Philosophy.
