NEWMAC Names Max Berkowitz Assistant Director for Strategic Communications

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has announced the hiring of Max Berkowitz as its new Assistant Director for Strategic Communications. Following roles at Springfield College and MIT, Berkowitz joins the conference office bringing more than a decade of experience promoting NEWMAC student-athletes, championships and institutional success. He will begin his role with the conference on August 3, 2026.

Berkowitz most recently served as Director of Strategic Athletic Communications at Springfield College, where he oversaw media relations for all 26 varsity sports while leading innovative storytelling, social media growth and live streaming initiatives. During his tenure, Springfield earned top three recognition for the NEWMAC Award of Excellence in Digital Broadcasting in both 2024-25 and 2025-26, and he coordinated media operations for the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship.

Prior to Springfield, Berkowitz spent two years as Sports Information Director at FDU-Florham, directing communications, marketing and game operations while supervising full-time and student staff. Before that, he served six years as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications, Promotions & Marketing at MIT, where he was the primary communications contact for 11 varsity sports and numerous NCAA and NEWMAC championship events. Throughout his career at MIT, Berkowitz promoted four national champions, nearly 400 All-Americans, 89 Academic All-Americans, 49 NEWMAC championship teams and numerous NCAA award winners while helping elevate the Institute's digital and social media presence.

Throughout his career, Berkowitz has built a reputation for strategic storytelling, creative content development and innovative digital engagement. His experience working closely with institutional leaders, coaches, student-athletes, conference administrators and national media outlets positions him to further elevate the NEWMAC's visibility while enhancing the conference's storytelling and brand.

As Assistant Director for Strategic Communications, Berkowitz will lead the conference's strategic communications efforts, including media relations, digital content, social media, championship communications and awards promotion. He will work collaboratively with member institutions to elevate the visibility of NEWMAC student-athletes, coaches and championship experiences while advancing the conference's commitment to academic and athletic excellence.

Berkowitz earned a Master of Education in Athletic Administration from Endicott College and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a minor in Sports Communication from Lasell College.
