MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Following MIT’s 15th consecutive NEWMAC Women's Swimming & Diving title, MIT student-athletes
Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.),
Kathy Nie (Boise, Idaho), and
Logan Yee (Charlotte, N.C.) earned major awards for their performance at the competition.
Smith was named NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year after winning three individual events, the 100 Back, 100 Fly, and 100 Free. She set the NEWMAC meet and open record in the 100 Fly with a time of 54.49. She was also a member of three of the Engineers’ winning relay teams, the 200 Freestyle, 400 Freestyle, and 400 Medley.
Nie was tabbed NEWMAC Rookie of the Year after winning the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:02.55, which was an NCAA B Cut time.
Logan Yee won the 1-meter board with an NCAA qualifying score of 492.05, and was the runner-up in the 3-meter board with an NCAA qualifying score of 495.30 to earn Diver of the Year honors.
In addition, MIT senior
Annika Naveen was awarded the Laurels of Academic Excellence award, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA competing at the NEWMAC Championship. Naveen boasts a 4.0 GPA in her Biological Engineering major.
Wellesley was voted the Swimming Coaching Staff of the Year after a third-place finish in the NEWMAC Championship, which was their best finish since 2016. The Blue had one first-place finish and two second-place finishes. The Blue are led by
Dawn Dill and assistant
Katie Gould.
The Engineers secured Co-Diving Staff of the Year honors after the Engineers placed first and second on both boards.
Gabe Bamforth is the head diving coach, while
Elizabeth Cron is the assistant diving coach.
Smith won Co-Diving Staff of the Year after senior
Katherine Welsh (St. Paul, Minn.) had a third-place finish on the 1-meter at NEWMACs and a sixth-place score on the 3-meter. Smith diving is led by
Louie Bierwert.
In addition, the top finisher in each event earns first-team All-Conference honors, while the second-place finisher earns a spot on the second team.

About the NEWMAC
The NEWMAC is an association of 12 selective academic institutions: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Salve Regina University, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, that are committed to providing high quality competitive athletic opportunities for student-athletes within an educational and respectful environment that embodies the NCAA Division III Philosophy.
