NEWMAC Releases 2024-2025 Women's Basketball Postseason Awards

Marlborough, Mass. – The NEWMAC has released its Women’s Basketball postseason awards, as announced by the conference on Wednesday morning. The awards are determined by the conference’s twelve coaches following the conclusion of regular season play.

Junior Bri Frongillo (Hopedale, Mass.) of Emerson College was voted NEWMAC Athlete of the Year. Springfield College’s Angela Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) was voted Defensive Player of the Year. Cyriah Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif.) from Clark University claimed Rookie of the Year honors. The Emerson College coaching staff was selected as Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.

Frongillo and Czeremcha headline the first team selections. Smith College saw two honored in Ally Landau (Livingston, N.J.) and Hannah Martin (North Andover, Mass.). Babson College’s Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) was selected, as was MIT’s Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) and Salve Regina University’s Sofia Neary (Wayne, N.J.). U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.) rounds out the first team selections.

Coleman is featured on the second team, along with Babson’s Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Emerson’s Charlotte Levison (Atherton, Calif.). MIT’s Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) joins the team, along with Briana Neary (Wayne, N.J.) from Salve Regina. Smith’s Jane Loo (Saratoga, Calif.) was honored, alongside Springfield’s Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) and Wellesley College’s Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.). WPI’s Ava Giansiracusa (Wethersfield, Conn.) closes out the all-conference honorees.  

Athlete of the Year- Bri Frongillo (Jr., G), Emerson College

Despite missing six games early in the year, Frongillo has been remarkably consistent, leading the conference in both scoring (22.5 points per game) and assists (5.2 per game) while also collecting 5.0 rebounds per game from the point guard position. She leads the conference in free throw percentage at 87% and is sixth in the league in field goal percentage at 43%.

Defensive Player of the Year – Angie Czeremcha (Sr., F), Springfield College

Senior forward Angie Czeremcha is second in the the conference in rebounds per game at 8.9. She averages 1.7 steals per game and compiled 17 blocks, guarding the opponents top front court player. Offensively, Czeremcha averaged 14.5 points per game and recorded nine double-doubles, powering the Pride to the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament. This is her second consecutive NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year award. 

Rookie of the Year- Cyriah Coleman (Fy., G), Clark University  

In her rookie campaign, Coleman led all NEWMAC rookies in points (13.3) and steals (2.2) and was second amongst rookies with 2.7 assists per game. She also pulled down 5.8 rebounds per game. The first-year reached double-figures in 18 games this season, including a season-high 24 point effort against WPI. The guard ranked second in the NEWMAC in made free throws (93) and free throw attempts (125), which amounted to 74.4 percent from the line. In conference play, Coleman averaged 13.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per night. The first-year also earned a NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honor during the season. 

Coaching Staff of the Year – Emerson College

Gould led Emerson to a 16-10 overall record and a 7-4 conference record, which was tied for third in the league. The Lions increased their conference win total from last season’s four conference wins to this season’s seven which is their highest win total since 2018-2019. The Lions offense was second in the league, scoring 70.5 points per game in league play. The Emerson staff includes Gould and assistants Jenni-Rose DiCecco and Natalie Fraioli.
