Marlborough, Mass. – The NEWMAC has released its men’s basketball postseason awards, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning. The awards are determined by the conference’s nine coaches following the conclusion of regular season play.
Guard
Aidan Callahan (Rowley, Mass.) of WPI was voted NEWMAC Athlete of the Year, while teammate
J.R. Newman (Havertown, Pa.) earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Babson College’s
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) was voted Rookie of the Year. The WPI coaching staff was selected as Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.
Callahan headlines the first team selections and is joined by teammate
Tim Reidy (Needham, Mass.). Babson’s
Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) was also honored, along with two Clark selections in
Kekoa McArdle (Pittsfield, Mass.) and
Bruce Saintilus (Plainville, Mass.). Wheaton College’s
Dimetri Iafrate (Johnston, R.I.) rounds out the first team selections.
Coast Guard leads the second team selections with two as
Luke Farrell (Ortley Beach, N.J.) and
Declan Rooney (Seattle, Wash.) were selected. Babson’s
Felix Kloman (Ipswich, Mass.) and Clark’s
Isaiah Taylor (Methuen, Mass.) each earned second team honors. Emerson College’s
Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) and WPI’s
Brett Marelli (Hampton, N.H.) close out the all-conference honorees.
Athlete of the Year- Aidan Callahan (Sr., G), WPI
Callahan was the top scorer and floor general for the Engineers, which finished the regular season with a 23-2 overall record and a 15-1 NEWMAC record, the most conference victories in conference history. The senior point guard averaged 15.5 points and a NEWMAC best 5.1 assists per game, along with a league-leading 2.3 assist to turnover ratio. Callahan was a key cog in a defensive effort that leads the league in defensive points allowed at 59.5 in league play.
Defensive Player of the Year- J.R. Newman (Jr., G), WPI
Newman is WPI's top defensive player on the team with the best scoring defense in the NEWMAC and seventh nationwide. He is asked to guard multiple positions and is assigned to guard top scorer of opponents. The Engineers are currently in the top 10 in Division III in defensive scoring (61.5) and led Division III in 3-point defensive field goal percentage (25.4).
Rookie of the Year- Timmy Mulvey (Fy., G), Babson College
Mulvey led all freshmen in scoring with 9.3 in conference play and three-point FGs (29) in NEWMAC play. He also ranked second among rookies in assists per game (2.0). Mulvey reached double figures in seven of 14 conference games and finished league play with a 2.00 assist-to-turnover ratio. The rookie helped Babson to a 10-6 conference record.
Coaching Staff of the Year – WPI
The Engineers, led by head coach
Chris Bartley, finished the regular season with a 23-2 overall record, including 15-1 in conference play, securing the top seed in the NEWMAC Tournament championship. WPI’s conference win total is the most in conference history. The Engineers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will serve as hosts. The WPI coaching staff includes Bartley,

David Brown,
Kahleb Downing and
Joseph Nuttall.
