CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 8 nationally ranked and top-seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, the MIT women's soccer team captured the program's 10th conference championship with a 3-0 win over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field.
The Engineers have now won three straight NEWMAC Championships and seven of the last eight. MIT will be making the program's 13th NCAA Tournament overall and ninth consecutive.
The Pride finish their season 11-9 overall, while MIT's win brings their overall record to 20-2-1. Springfield, which started its season at 1-6, ended its first campaign under Kursten Shade by winning seven of its final eight contests to reach the championship game in Cambridge.
Leena Mehendale was named the NEWMAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and earned the NEWMAC Laurels of Academic Excellence Award.
The first goal of the match came when Natalie Barnouw sent a pass back out to Alice Vranka who quickly sent it right back to Barnouw for the one-footed goal at 12:07.
Barnouw one-touched the ball into the corner of the goal for her second score of the half at 24:47 when Sean Luk got through the Pride defense and hit Barnouw in stride in front of the goal.
The final score of the day came when Chloe Dai lifted a ball to Lauren Won who put the ball into the back of the net at 75:25 to seal the win for the Engineers.
Barnouw now has 20 goals this season which ties the program record for goals in a season while her 53 points are a new program record. Her 138 career points tie the program record, and she is four goals shy of the career goal mark as she currently has 52.
Luk tallied her ninth assist while Vranka and Dai got their second. Won scored her fourth goal of the season.
Ava Muffoletto improves to 17-0 as she made one save in the first half.
Maddy Noll made one save in the second half to secure the shutout.
Mairead Marsden had six saves for the Pride.
The Engineers' defense allowed just five total shots and got the 18th shutout of the season, which is two shy of the program record.
The NCAA Selection show will be on Monday, November 10 at 11:00 AM on NCAA.com. The Engineers will learn who and where they will be playing in the NCAA Tournament which begins next weekend.
