No. 3 MIT, No. 4 Springfield Advance to NEWMAC Field Hockey Semifinals

No. 6 Wellesley 1, No. 3 MIT 3 – Final

No. 3 seed MIT scored twice in the third quarter as it went on to defeat No. 6 seed Wellesley College, 3-1, in the first round of the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship on Tuesday night at Jack Barry Field. Jane Tortorella earned two assists for the Engineers while Claudia Summers scored the lone goal for the Blue.

In the first quarter, MIT led the way in shots on goal (6-1) and penalty corners (5-1), but it could not get on the scoreboard.

Wellesley had the upper hand in the second stanza, generating a 4-0 margin in shots on goal and earning two penalty corners, the only of the frame, but the game remained scoreless.

The Engineers ended the stalemate almost three minutes into the third quarter. Tortorella corralled the rebound of her saved shot and quickly passed the ball across the front of the cage to Janie Thomas for the opening tally. MIT increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 41st minute when Bailey McIntyre connected on a pass from Drew Hussar during a penalty corner.

The Blue ended the shutout 26 seconds later. Madeline Hamstra passed the ball from the near side, and it made its way through traffic to Summers, who redirected it at the far post.

Thomas had a chance to extend the hosts' lead early in the fourth quarter; however, her penalty stroke attempt was off the mark. The Engineers created some breathing room moments later in the 49th minute when Tortorella set up Audrey Oh for a goal during a penalty corner.

Maeve Zimmer made seven saves for MIT while Hannah Simmonds collected 12 saves for Wellesley.

The Engineers ended the night with advantages in shots (23-10), shots on goal (16-8), and penalty corners (14-3).

MIT will travel to nationally ranked No. 24 and No. 2 seed WPI for the semifinals of the NEWMAC Championship on Thursday, November 6 at 4:00 PM. This will be the 10th postseason meeting between the teams and the fourth consecutive year they will be facing off in the semifinals.
