CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 8 MIT women's soccer team advances to the NCAA Third Round with a penalty kick goal from Natalie Barnouw midway through the first half proved to be the game-winner as the Engineers defeated Colby 1-0 on Sunday afternoon on Roberts Field.
Arianna Doss was fouled in the box, which set up a penalty kick chance for Natalie Barnouw , who buried the shot into the corner, past a diving MK Marshall at 24:04.
Jane Maguire got a shot on goal for Colby, looking to even the score, but
Ava Muffoletto made the save to keep the Engineers in the lead.
Maddy Noll came in for Muffoletto and was quickly tested by Avery Barton with a shot less than 10 minutes into the second half. The Mules had the ball in the Engineers' zone much of the second half, but the Engineers got key defense stops by their backline, including a tackle by
Sasha Ceol on a Mule player in the box to preserve the shutout win.
The 22 wins and 20 shutouts both tie program records. The wins record was set in 2021, and the shutout record was set in 2019. The 20 shutouts lead Division III.
Barnouw collected her 23rd goal and 59th point for the season. She scored a goal in four straight matches. Her 55 career goals are one shy of the program record. She has already broken the single-season goals and points record as well as the career points record.
Muffoletto improves to 19-0 on the year with three first-half saves. Noll made one save in her 45 minutes of play.
MIT will play WashU next weekend in the NCAA Third Round.
