Westwood, Mass.- The NEWMAC has announced its Athlete of the Week honorees for the week ending 4/21/24. The full list of honorees can be found below.
Baseball
Athlete of the Week- Jack Julian (Sr., SS), Babson College
Senior
Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) batted .538 (7-for-13) with a double, two RBI, four stolen bases and three walks as Babson won three of four games. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Tuesday’s 5-4 victory over Lasell and was 1-or-3 with a walk, a steal and two runs scored in Wednesday’s 10-4 triumph over Tufts. Julian capped the week with a 4-for-4 performance that included a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and three runs scored to help the Beavers split Sunday’s doubleheader against WPI with a 19-4 game-two win.
Pitcher of the Week- Ryan McCarroll (Jr., P), Wheaton College
Junior
Ryan McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hurled seven and two-thirds innings of shutout ball and allowed just four hits, while striking out seven batters in a 3-0 win over No. 7 Salve Regina University on April 20.
Men’s Lacrosse
Face-Off Specialist of the Week- Andrew Palleiko (GS., FOM), MIT
Graduate student
Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) went 28-of-55 in faceoff attempts, collected 21 groundballs, and added one goal and one assist. He won 11 of his 27 faceoffs, corralled seven groundballs, and had an assist in a 14-12 loss to Williams on Tuesday. Palleiko then went 17-of-28 at the faceoff “x”, scooped up 14 groundballs, and scored the game-winning goal six seconds into overtime as the Engineers defeated Wheaton, 13-12, on Saturday.
Offensive Athlete of the Week- Jake Degnan (FY., M), Springfield College
First-year
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) registered 11 goals and three assists for 14 points in a 1-1 week for the Pride. On Saturday, Degnan recorded a career-high eight goals in addition to one assist as he powered Springfield to a 17-8 NEWMAC win over Salve Regina to push the Pride’s conference winning streak to four. Prior to that, on Wednesday at No. 14 Wesleyan, Degnan tallied a team-best three goals and two assists in a setback to the Cardinals.
Defensive Athlete of the Week – Brendan Maher (Sr., D), Babson College
Senior
Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) finished with five ground balls and five caused turnovers as No. 11/9 Babson split a pair of games. He recorded two forced turnovers and a ground ball in Tuesday’s loss at No. 4/4 Tufts and followed it up by matching his season high with three caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls as the Beavers held Clark to its lowest scoring output in two seasons and clinched their second consecutive NEWMAC regular season title in Saturday’s 21-2 victory.
Women’s Lacrosse
Offensive Athlete of the Week- Emi Bisson (So., M), Mount Holyoke College
Sophomore
Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) scored a career-high eight goals, to go with two assists and 13 draw controls in the Lyons' 19-18 overtime loss to Emerson on Monday. The 13 draw controls were the second-most by any player in a NEWMAC game this season. For the week, Bisson totaled 12 goals, 5 assists, 21 draw controls, 4 caused turnovers and 6 ground balls.
Defensive Athlete of the Week – Kathleen Murphy (Jr., GK), Babson College
Junior
Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) posted 4.50 goals against average and a .609 save percentage while totaling 14 saves in a pair of wins for No. 18 Babson. She made two first-half saves without allowing a goal in Wednesday’s 16-5 victory at Wheaton and followed it up by finishing one shy of her season high with 12 saves to help the Beavers defeat Springfield, 16-9, to remain unbeaten in NEWMAC play.
Rowing
Boat of the Week – 2V Eight, Smith
Smith's 2V competed at the New York State Championship this weekend and placed third in the morning heat with a time of 7:39.513, coming in 3rd to qualify for the Grand Final. In the afternoon Grand Final, Smith placed second, closing the gap from the morning heat against Hamilton and finishing ahead of Marist who came in 3rd.
Softball
Athlete of the Week- Sandy Fairbairn (Fy, IF), WPI
First year
Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, Mass.) recorded a .500/.533/.831 slash line and compiled 10 runs scored, 14 RBI, three doubles, two homers and six stolen bases to help the Engineers to a 6-1 mark last week as the Crimson and Gray outscored their opponents 60-24 on the week. The Engineers posted three-consecutive doubleheader sweeps including a pair against NEWMAC opponents Smith and Salve Regina.
Pitcher of the Week- Caroline Langmeyer (So., P), MIT
Sophomore
Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) posted a 4-1 week for MIT with a 1.74 ERA and four complete games. Langmeyer struck out a career-high 11 batters in her two-hit, no walk, shutout performance against Salve Regina in game one. She then pitched 1.1 innings in game two to help the Engineers rally for the DH sweep. Langmeyer collected 28 strikeouts during the week and held opponents to a .174 batting average. In 28.1 innings of work, she gave up just seven runs, eight walks, and 16 hits.
Men’s Tennis
Singles Athlete of the Week- Ole Lepsoe (Jr.), Babson
Junior
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) went 3-0 with one victory at number and a pair of wins at number three. He was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Sean Dreher of Coast Guard at number three on Monday, defeated Paul Berteaux 6-3, 7-5 at number two in Babson’s 9-0 victory over Wheaton on Wednesday, and capped the week with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph in the Beavers’ 9-0 sweep of No. 37 Hobart on Sunday.
Doubles Team of the Week – Ole Lepsoe and Logan Back, Babson College
Ole Lepsoe and
Logan Back went 2-0 at number one doubles. They defeated Jaime Galligo and Jake Murray of Wheaton 8-4 on Wednesday and concluded the regular season with an 8-4 triumph over Sean Pesin and Nick Fischer as the Beavers defeated No. 37 Hobart, 9-0, on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
Singles Athlete of the Week- Olivia Soffer, (Jr.), Babson
Junior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went 2-0 at number one singles against a pair of NEWMAC opponents. She defeated the region’s third-ranked player, Katya Shepherd Johnson of MIT, 6-4, 7-5 on Friday and followed it up with an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kapom Vettayawaikoon of Springfield on Saturday.
Doubles Team of the Week- Olivia Soffer and Matia Cristiani, Babson College
Olivia Soffer and
Matia Cristiani stayed unbeaten at number one doubles in league play with a pair of wins over the weekend. They defeated Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados of MIT 8-4 on Friday and posted another 8-4 victory over Kapom Vettayawaikoon and Ramida Manataweewat of Springfield on Saturday. The win over the Pride helped Soffer become the Beavers’ career leader with her 61 doubles victory.
Men’s Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week- Sam Engebretson (Jr.), MIT
Junior
Sam Engebretson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won the discus (49.24m / 161’ 6”) and hammer throw (58.20m / 190’ 11”) and was the runner up in shot put (16.79m / 55’ 1”) at the Sean Collier Invitational this past weekend. His shot put performance ranks ninth in Division III this year while his hammer throw mark is currently 12th.

Dante Lingley posted a first-place finish in a time of 41.73-seconds at Saturday's Trinity Invitational. The time currently ranks second in the NEWMAC and ultimately led Springfield to a first-place finish as a team over the weekend.
Co-Track Athlete of the Week- Anthony Rodriguez (Sr.), Babson College
Senior Anthony Rodriguez (Prairie View, Ill.) shattered his own school record by more than 29 seconds on the way to finishing first in the 10,000 meters at MIT’s Sean Collier Invitational Distance Night on Friday. His time of 29:43.61 ranks first this season in the NEWMAC, second in New England and is currently 14th in Division III.
Co-Track Athlete of the Week- David Reynolds (GS), WPI
Graduate student
David Reynolds (Andover, N.H.) bettered his own program 10k record six seconds after dropping a 29:50.57 time at MIT’s Sean Collier Distance Night that stands at 17th overall in NCAA Division III. Less than 15 hours later, Reynolds broke the unofficial NCAA Division III record in the rare two-mile event with a 9:26.25 trek to take second overall, besting the next DIII runner by over 23 seconds at the George Davis Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell.
Women’s Track & Field
Field Athlete of the Week- Alexis Boykin (Jr.), MIT
Junior
Alexis Boykin (Clayton, Ohio) won the hammer throw (59.63 / 195’ 8”) and shot put (14.45m / 47’ 5”) and was the runner up in discus (47.40m / 155’ 6”) at the Sean Collier Invitational this past weekend. Her performance in the hammer throw currently leads the country and resulted in a personal record.
Relay Team of the Week- 4X100 Relay, Wheaton College

Savanna Vargas (Peabody, Mass.), senior
Schyler Wyse (East Granby, Conn.) and sophomores
Amanda Castaldi (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Michaina Loriston (Boston, Mass.) turned in a time of 46.91 to place 11th and second among Division III squads at the Georgia Tech. Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. on April 20. The time stands as the third-fastest in NCAA Division III and ranks as the fifth-fastest 4X100 time in school history.
Track Athlete of the Week- Grace Hadley (GS.), WPI
Graduate student
Grace Hadley (North Reading, Mass.) posted two school records this weekend as she competed in the Sean Collier Distance Night on Friday followed by day two at the George Davis Invitational. Friday, Hadley became just the fourth woman in NCAA Division III history to run sub-16 minutes in the 5k. Her 15:56.26 time is fourth all-time in NCAA DIII history and is the best time this season. On Saturday, she set the program record mark in the 800m after clocking a 2:08.55 which is ranks third overall in Division III. Lastly, she rounded out action as the third leg in the 4x400 that posted a 4:06.42 time that was good for fourth.
