NEWMAC Announces Athlete of the Week Honorees (week ending March 24)

Westwood, Mass.- The NEWMAC has announced its Athlete of the Week honorees for the week ending 3/24/24.  The full list of honorees can be found below.
 
Baseball
 
Athlete of the Week- Andrew Cash (Jr., OF), WPI
 
Junior Andrew Cash (Marlboro, Mass.) collected hits in seven of his 11 at-bats last week on his way to delivering a .636 batting average and an eye-popping slash line of .636/.667/1.455.   The junior launched three homers in two contests to go along with six runs scored and 10 runs batted in along with a slugging percentage of 1.455.  Cash amassed three hits, including a pair of home runs and seven total RBI in a 18-16 victory over previously undefeated Roger Williams on Tuesday before smashing four more hits, including a homer, and driving in three more runs in a wild 18-16 loss to Suffolk the following day.
 
Pitcher of the Week- Ryan McCarroll, (Jr., P), Wheaton College 
 
Junior Ryan McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tossed seven innings of three-hit shutout ball and surrendered just one walk, while striking out a season-high 10 batters in a 2-0 victory over visiting Brandeis University on March 22 in Norton. He did not allow a base runner past second base during the game. 
 
Men’s Lacrosse
 
Face-Off Specialist of the Week- James Turco (Gr., FOM), Babson College
 
Graduate student James Turco (Woodbury, N.Y.) won 83.3 percent of his face-offs (10-of-12), tied for game-high honors with six ground balls and scored a goal as No. 18 Babson defeated MIT, 15-7, in a rematch of last year’s conference title game on Saturday. He won all five of his second-half face-offs and scored the first of three straight fourth-quarter goals to give the Beavers a 10-goal lead. 
 
Offensive Athlete of the Week- Nick Fulgione (Sr., M), Emerson College  
 
Senior Nick Fulgione (North Andover, Mass.) helped lead the Lions to a 12-10 conference victory over Springfield on Saturday. Fulgione had a hand in seven of Emerson's 12 goals, recording 4 goals and 3 assists in the Lions first ever win against the Pride. Fulgione scored the final go-ahead goal near the end of the third that help catapult the Lions to victory as they did not trail the Pride for the remainder of the game.
 
Defensive Athlete of the Week – Connor Almstrom (Jr., GK), Wheaton College  
 
Junior Connor Almstrom (Cumberland, R.I.) stopped 12 of 16 shots in a 10-4 road win at NEWMAC rival United States Coast Guard Academy, finishing with a .750 save percentage. The junior's effort was crucial, considering the Bears' 46-30 shot advantage over the Lyons and eight man-up situations that all resulted without a goal.
 
Women’s Lacrosse
 
Offensive Athlete of the Week- Jessica Evans (Jr., M), Babson College
 
Junior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) finished the weekend with seven goals and three assists for 10 points as Babson extended its winning streak to four with home victories over Smith and No. 13 Trinity. She matched her season high with four goals in Saturday’s 20-3 rout of the Pioneers and totaled a season-high six points on three goals and three assists to help the Beavers record their second top-20 win of the season by knocking off the Bantams, 16-7. 
 
Defensive Athlete of the Week – Molly Dulde (So., GK), MIT
 
Sophomore Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) tallied 11 saves, a 1.29 goals against average, and a .846 save percentage as she allowed two goals while facing 21 shots in a 2-0 week for MIT. In an 11-5 win over No. 15 Amherst on Wednesday, she made two saves on six shots and allowed one goal in the first half as the Engineers built a 7-1 lead in the first 30 minutes. Also playing in the first half of MIT's 8-5 victory at Coast Guard on Saturday, Dulde collected nine saves on 15 shots and conceded one goal as the Engineers created a 4-1 halftime lead.
 
Softball
 
Athlete of the Week- Riley O’Brien (Fy., IF), WPI
 
First year Riley O’Brien (Wynantskill, N.Y.) tallied four hits in seven at-bats last week en route to hitting .571 with a slash line of .571/.700/1.422. The rookie infielder collected three hits, including smashing her first two career home runs, and totaled four RBI to help WPI complete a sweep of defending GNAC regular season champion Johnson & Wales with a 6-2 nightcap victory over the Wildcats. O’Brien also launched a two-run homer Friday in game two against Brandeis which was halted tied 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning and will be resumed at a later date.  
 
Pitcher of the Week- Sarah Wicker (Fy., P), Wellesley College

First year Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) earned a pair of wins while throwing 15 innings for the Blue last week. Wicker only allowed a single earned run (0.46 ERA) in three appearances, striking out 14 (6.53 K/7). Wicker's performances were crucial in Wellesley's wins over William Paterson and Millikin. Wicker recorded a sub-1 WHIP of 0.87 for the week.
 
Men’s Tennis
 
Singles Athlete of the Week- Tatsuya Kimoto, (Jr.), Springfield College
 
Junior Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) earned a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles for the Pride as he helped Springfield to a 7-2 win over Emerson to open NEWMAC play on Saturday.

Doubles Team of the Week – Ole Lepsoe and Caymus Choi, Babson College  
 
Junior Ole Lepsoe and first-year Caymus Choi picked up their first victory of the season at number one doubles defeating Edward Shepherd-Johnson and Aris Kirkorian of Clark, 8-3, in Saturday’s 9-0 victory over the Cougars. 
 
Women’s Tennis
 
Singles Athlete of the Week- Melinda Alviar, (Sr.), Wellesley College
 
Senior Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) went 3-0 without losing a single set at No. 2 & 3 singles this past week. The senior captain picked up a key 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles in a 5-4 team win over George Fox. Alviar then won at No. 2 singles against Lewis & Clark and Linfield. Alviar beat Lewis & Clark 7-5, 6-4 and Linfield 6-2, 6-1.
 
Doubles Team of the Week- Cal Smith and Rachel Allen, Mount Holyoke College  
 
Sophomore Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first-year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) went 3-0 on the week as Mount Holyoke's No. 2 doubles, team, registering wins against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, and Springfield in a 3-0 week for the Lyons. 
 
Women’s Track & Field
 
Field Athlete of the Week- Anika Wagner (So., Thrower), Wheaton College
 
Sophomore Anika Wagner (Stowe, Vt.) placed 10th at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.35 meters to rank as the third-best throw in school history in the event. She also added a 17th-place finish in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 10.87 meters in the meet against Division I, II and III competitors on in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on March 15-16.
 
 
Relay Team of the Week- 4X100 Relay, Wheaton College
 
The Wheaton quartet of first year Savanna Vargas (Peabody, Mass.), senior Schyler Wyse (East Granby, Conn.) and sophomores Wendy Wooden (Sharon, Mass.) and Michaina Loriston (Boston, Mass.) combined on a time of 47.49 to finish second to Division I Coastal Carolina University at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Doug E. Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on March 16. The Lyons' time ranks as the second-fastest in NCAA Division III next to Emory University. 
 
Track Athlete of the Week- Angela Hagstrom (Jr., Hurdles), Babson College
 
Junior Angela Hagstrom (Portsmouth. N.H.) recorded a time of 1:05.19 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Meet in San Diego on March 16. The mark currently ranks 11th in Division III and just 0.07 seconds off her career best set last year.
