Westwood, Mass.- The NEWMAC has announced its Athlete of the Week honorees for the week ending 12/1/24. The full list of honorees can be found below.
Men’s Basketball
Offensive Athlete of the Week- Aidan Callahan (Sr., G), WPI
Senior
Aidan Callahan (Rowley, Mass.) netted 19 points in both of WPI’s two victories last week as the No. 20 Engineers defeated Fitchburg State and Tufts to move to 7-0 on the season. The senior captain stuffed the stat sheets on Saturday with five rebounds, four assists and three steaks Saturday as the Crimson and Gray went on the road and rallied from a six-point second half deficit to topple No. 8 Tufts 74-61. Earlier in the week, Callahan also dished out four assists, gobbled up three boards and chipped in with a steal and a block as the Crimson and Gray cruised to 79-60 home triumph over Fitchburg State on Tuesday. The point guard totaled 38 points, eight rebounds and eight assists while shooting 50% from the floor and 81.8% from the free throw line.
Defensive Athlete of the Week- Nate Amado (Sr., G/F), Babson College
Senior
Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) pulled down 15 defensive rebounds and added five steals as Babson held a pair of opponents to just 35.8 percent shooting in a 2-0 week. He grabbed four rebounds as the Beavers held Albertus Magnus to its lowest scoring output since 2010 in an 83-50 win on Tuesday and then matched his career high with five steals and hauled down 13 rebounds, 11 of them on the defensive end, as the Green and White recorded a 77-63 win at previously unbeaten Brandeis on Sunday. Amado posted a double-double against the Judges, who were held 32 points below their season average.
Women’s Basketball
Offensive Athlete of the Week- Hannah Smith (So., G), Smith College
Sophomore
Hannah Martin (North Andover, Mass.) tallied her first double-double (19 points and 10 rebounds) of the year to lead Smith to a 74-49 win at Trinity College Sunday afternoon. Martin also added four assists and four steals as the Pioneers improved to 5-1 on the year.
Defensive Athlete of the Week- Samantha Reale (So., G/F), Babson College
Sophomore
Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) recorded her first career double-double and finished with four steals, one blocked shot and a career-high 10 rebounds in last Tuesday’s 63-52 victory over Brandeis. In addition to matching her season high in steals, she helped the Beavers hold the Judges to just 33.9 percent shooting.
