NEWMAC Announces Women's Soccer Postseason Awards; MIT Takes Home Three Major Awards

Westwood, Mass. – The NEWMAC has released its Women's Soccer postseason awards, as announced by the conference on Thursday morning. The awards are determined by the conference's twelve coaches following the conclusion of regular season play.

Midfielder Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) of MIT was voted NEWMAC Athlete of the Year, while her teammate Lauren Davis (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) earned Defensive Athlete of the Year honors. Springfield College's Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.) was voted Rookie of the Year. The MIT coaching staff was selected as Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.

Barnouw headlines the first team selections at the midfielder position, and is joined by teammate Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.).  Emerson College's Yoshiko Slater (Laurel, Md.) and Smith College's Una Keller (Davis, Calif.) complete the midfielder quartet. MIT leads the way with two forward honorees in Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) and Sean Luk (Bel Air. Md.). They are joined by Babson College's Elisa Diletizia (Canton, Mass.) and Springfield College's Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.). Davis earned first team honors in the defender slot and is joined by teammate Madeline Seebeck (San Antonio, Texas), Anna Swisher (Los Angeles, Calif.) of Emerson, Gabby Scott (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) of Springfield, Laura Lukowicz (Coventry, R.I) of Babson and Jess English (Ledyard, Conn.) of WPI. Smith's Skylar Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) and Wheaton College's Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) round out the first team selections in the goalkeeper position.

Salmon is featured at the second team forward slot, alongside her teammate Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.). Clark University is represented by Georgia Louis (West Hartford, Conn.), while Emerson's Linae Bezdek (Frisco, Texas) was also honored. Five midfielders garnered second team accolades in Babson's Priscilla-Rose Men-Martin (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), Emerson's Maddie Khaw (Portland, Ore.), MIT's Leena Mehendale (Dallas, Texas), Springfield's Molly Baxter (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and WPI's Olivia Toolin (Bedford, N.H.). Babson leads the way with two second team defender selections, as both Jadyn Mapura (East Hanover, N.J.) and Caroline Sutherland (Millville, Mass.) garnered the accolade. Clark's Ashlee Samuel (Elmont, N.Y.), Smith's Morgan Watson (Piedmont, Okla.), Wellesley College's Michelle Lim (Saratoga, Calif.) and Wheaton's Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.) also received the nod. Goalkeeper Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) wraps up the second team.  

Athlete of the Year- Natalie Barnouw (Sr., M), MIT

A center midfielder, Barnouw is a true box-to-box player in defending and attacking. In attack, she leads the conference with 11 goals, seven of which came in league play, and points with 26 (17 in league play).  She also has two game-winning goals in league play, tops in the NEWMAC, and four in overall play, which puts her in a tie for the league lead. She helped MIT to an undefeated conference run, and their second-straight NEWMAC title.

Defensive Player of the Year – Lauren Davis (Sr., D), MIT

Davis was the leader of the best defensive team in the conference, which has as shutout in over 60 percent of its games overall and only given up more than one goal twice all season – both to nationally ranked teams. The Engineers gave up only four goals in conference play, at 0.36 goals per game. Davis has also scored four times on corner kicks on headers – all in conference games – two of which were game-winning goals in NEWMAC play.

Rookie of the Year- Mia Salmon (Fr., F), Springfield

Salmon leads all rookies in goals with eight, five of which came in conference play, points with 19, 11 in NEWMAC play, and game winning goals with two. She finished third overall in the league in goals, and fourth in points. Salmon registered at least one point in six out of eleven conference games.

Coaching Staff of the Year – MIT

MIT, led by Martin Desmarais, went undefeated in conference play at 11-0-0, and has lost only one match this season, sitting at 20-1-1, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation by United Soccer Coaches (USC). MIT won the NEWMAC Championship for the second-straight season, earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The MIT coaching staff includes Desmarais, and assistant coaches Jeff Katz and KD Dolan.
