WATERVILLE, Maine—Junior Carmi McDonald (Hopkinton, Mass.) led all players with six goals and senior Gianna Bruno (New Canaan, Conn.) handed out eight assists and finished with nine points to help 12th-ranked Colby College defeat visiting Babson College, 20-8, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Bill Alfond Field.

Babson, which had its six-game winning streak snapped, sees the season come to a close at 13-8 overall. Colby, which is now 13-5 overall, advances to the third round for the second year in a row.

Graduate student Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) both scored twice and sophomore Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) added a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Fellow sophomore Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) finished with six draw controls, junior Zoe Michaud (Bedford, N.H.) forced two turnovers and sophomore Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made six saves in the loss.

Senior Jillian Mazzocca (West Hartford, Conn.) contributed two caused turnovers and junior Sarah Hearns (South Hamilton, Mass.) turned away 10 shots in the win.

McDonald scored two quick goals to give Colby an early 3-0 edge before Dodge responded with a pair of tallies just 36 seconds apart to pull the Green and White within 3-2 with 6:42 to go in the opening period. Curtis notched her first goal to keep the Beavers within one at the 2:27 mark before the Mules scored three times, including two goals by Hennessey, over the final 1:40 of the quarter to push their lead to 7-3.

Evans scored in transition off a feed from Dodge nearly six minutes into the second but Bruno set up Eddy's second goals and Hennessey buried a free-position chance to stretch the margin to 10-4 with 5:09 to go until halftime. Sophomore Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) answered to pull Babson back within five 53 seconds later but McDonald scored three times during a four-goal run that helped Colby extend its advantage to 14-5 just over seven minutes into the third quarter.

Curtis and junior Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals just 37 seconds apart to cut the Beavers' deficit to 14-7 before the Mules closed the game on a 6-1 run over the final 18 minutes to pull away.

Colby finished with a 21-18 edge in ground balls, a 19-13 advantage in draw controls and converted 5-of-9 free-position changes. Babson scored on 2-of-4 free-position opportunities and forced the Mules into 21 turnovers.
