ATLANTA (March 16, 2023) – Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mi/Detroit Country Day) of Smith College is the 2023 WBCA NCAA Division III Player of the Year and headlines the 2023 WBCA NCAA Division III Coaches' All-America team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
The WBCA presents the Player of the Year award annually to the top player in five of the six WBCA membership divisions (NCAA Divisions II, and III, NAIA, two-year college and high school). The Player of the Year and the 10-member Coaches' All-America team in each division are selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches in that division.
"The WBCA is pleased to name Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mi/Detroit Country Day) as the 2023 WBCA NCAA Division III Player of the Year," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "She is most deserving of this distinguished honor. The WBCA applauds Morgan for her hard work, dedication and contributions to the game during the 2022-23 season."
"This honor validates all the hard work Morgan has put into her development," said head coach Lynn Hersey. "From the outside, you see a complete player who can dominate a game in a variety of ways. From the inside, you see a player with incredible habits and an infectious competitive mindset. She thrives under pressure and wants the ball when the game is on the line. She is mentally tough and has tremendous confidence, which she has earned from endless hours in the gym honing her skills. She is disciplined, precise and deliberate and has taken no short cuts. Her success is not a result of a mere physical gift, it's a product of her passion for the sport and her determination to find greatness. She has gained the trust and respect of her teammates and coaches and wants to win for her team and the Smith community. We are proud she puts on a Smith uniform each day."
Morrison is the Pioneers' first WBCA Player of the Year recipient and earns All-America honors for her performance this season on the hardwood.
For her three-year career to this point, Morrison appeared in 88 games with 34 starts and helped Smith post an 81-8 record during that time.
