New Orleans, La. (November 22) -- MIT cross country head coach Riley Macon has been named as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Men's Cross Country National Coach of the Year after leading the Engineers to the first NCAA Championship in program history.
In his first season at the helm for the Engineers, Macon led the team to five Invitational titles, including the program's 24th straight NEWMAC Championship with a perfect score of 15 points. The team followed that with a 33-point showing to capture the NCAA New England Championship at Bowdoin as all seven Engineers were honored as All-Region performers.
Capping off the season was a dominant performance in challenging conditions in Lansing, Michigan as the Engineers won the national championship with a total of 82 points. In the meet, the top five MIT runners all earned USTFCCCA honors for the second straight year. The national championship was the first-ever for any MIT team at an NCAA National Championship.
