NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Caitlyn Lawrence has been announced as the head coach of the Smith College tennis team. Lawrence returns to Smith after serving as a graduate assistant for two years from 2015 - 2017.
Lawrence spent the past season as the head men's and women's tennis coach and physical education instructor at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Lawrence guided the men's team to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Empire 8 playoffs after an eight-year absence. The eight victories tied for the most wins since 1988 and the team's 5-3 mark in the Empire 8 tied a program record for conference victories. She would also guide the women's program to an overall record of 6-6.
"We are excited to welcome Caitlyn back to Smith College," said Hughes. "She was an excellent assistant coach and I expect big things out of her as our head coach. I know she will hit the ground running and I am anxious to see where she can take this program."
While at Smith, Lawrence assisted in the planning and execution of daily practice sessions, provided in-competition coaching, implemented recruiting strategies, and developed and managed the team's social media presence. She earned her Master of Science in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith in 2017.
Lawrence served as the Director of Summer Programs and Tennis Coach at Simcoe Tennis from 2007 to 2015. While at Simcoe, she coached high-performance junior teams and worked with players who have competed at the DII, DIII, NAIA, and international level as well as supervised and trained coaches to instruct programs congruent with Simcoe Tennis' philosophy.
"I am very excited and grateful to have the opportunity to return to Smith College as the head tennis coach", commented Lawrence. "I want to thank Kristin Hughes, the athletic department, and the college for their support. This program has immense potential and I am eager to lead the next chapter of Pioneer Tennis."
Lawrence was a four-year student-athlete and three-year captain of the tennis team at Division II University of South Caroline Aiken. She completed her undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 2014. Lawrence attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in 2014 and the NCAA Leadership Forum in 2010.
