WESTWOOD, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its annual women's swimming and diving preseason coaches' poll on Friday morning. Following an impressive 2016-17 NEWMAC Championship and NCAA performances, the MIT Engineers have been tabbed as the preseason favorites with nine first place votes.
Last season MIT took home the programs seventh consecutive NEWMAC crown with a total of 1,422 points. After finishing the 2016-17 championships within 3.5 points of eachother WPI and Wheaton are tied at No. 2 in the coaches' poll while WPI earned one first place vote.
Springfield who finished fourth last year has been tabbed No. 4 followed by No. 5 Wellesley and No. 6 Coast Guard. Rounding out the remaining four slots is No. 7 Smith, No. 8 Clark, No. 9 Mount Holyoke and No. 10 Babson.
The 2017-18 season will bring back a total of 23 individual student-athletes who garnered All-Conference honors last season while 11 took home All-America accolades. The Swimmer of the Year, Wheaton's Jenne Hayden will return to the pool along with Rookie of the Year, MIT's Kayla Holman. Sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter national championship events last season, NEWMAC/National Diver of the Year, Wellesey's Maura Sticco-Ivins will also return to the boards this winter.
The NEWMAC is looking forward to the 2017-18 season and seeing many student-athletes represent the conference and their institutions at the NCAA Regional and National Championships.
