Springfield Tabbed As Preseason Favorite in Football Preseason Coaches' Poll

WESTWOOD, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) is looking ahead to its third football season with the 2019 Football Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Springfield was tabbed as the preseason favorite among the league's eight team, after picking up six first-place tallies. The Pride have won 18 games in the past two seasons and will look to continue that success with preseason All-American center Nick Bainter and All-Conference selections in linebacker AJ Smith, halfback Hunter Belzo, fullback Tim Callahan and tight end David Mikos

After earning the title of 2018 NEWMAC Champion and an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, MIT is ranked second with two first-place votes. Led by the 2018 NEWMAC Coach of the Year in Brian Bubna, the Engineers are returning seven All-Conference selections, led by offensive linemen Nathan Basinger and Will Roberts, along with defensive lineman Ben Bennington

WPI and Merchant Marine finished the poll tied at third, while Coast Guard claimed the No. 5 spot. The Engineers will return seven All-Conference selections, highlighted by running back Sean McAllen, defensive back Sam Casey, defensive lineman Mike McGoff and linebacker Nick Ostrowski.

Merchant Marine will welcome back four All-Conference selections. Among the returners for the Mariners is return specialist Joe Vitelli, who led the conference in 2018 in kick return yards. After registering the most wins since 2007 last season, Coast Guard will look to returning All-Conference selections in defensive back Patrick Crowley, quarterback Ryan Jones, and wide receiver Justin Moffatt, who led the league in receptions and yards last season.

Norwich earned a sixth-place finish in the preseason poll and will return seven All-Conference honorees, highlighted by running back Aaron Conner, wide receiver Manni Romero and defensive back Brasean Stewart

Catholic claimed the No. 7 spot and returns quarter back Brady Berger, who led the NEWMAC in passing yards per game, completions and completion percentage in 2018. Maine Maritime rounded out the poll and will welcome back the 2018 Co-Rookie of the Year in Terrell Thomas and Second Team All-Conference honoree Dominic Casale

The first 2019 NEWMAC football matchup will be on Saturday, September 21st. Catch all the action this season here
