No. 3 Babson, No. 4 MIT Advance to Double-Elimination Round of NEWMAC Baseball Championship

Game 1- No. 6 Clark 6, No. 3 Babson 14 - Final

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) homered twice, and sophomore Graydon Vyse (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts over 8.0 innings as third-seeded Babson College defeated sixth-seeded Clark University, 14-6, to open the NEWMAC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

Babson, which has won three in a row and seven of its last eight games overall, improves to 23-15 on the year while advancing to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. Clark sees its season come to a close at 21-17.

Teator led all players with five RBI, sophomore Dylan Drazka (Rye Brook, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases and five runs scored, and senior Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI to lead the Beavers' 15-hit attack. Sophomore Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) singled twice and scored three runs, classmate Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.J.) and junior Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) finished with two hits apiece and a run scored in support of Vyse, who matched his longest outing of the season while improving to 2-0 with the victory.

Senior Dom Mariani (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Myles Fournier (Hartford, Conn.) both homered while finishing with three hits and three RBI apiece to lead the Cougars. Bennett Hewett (Lebanon, N.H.) also went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored in the loss.

The Green and White got an RBI groundout from Teator, and a sacrifice fly from Cushner to grab a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Teator hit a two-run bomb in the third, and Hvozdovic hit a solo homer, his first of the year, in the fourth to build a 5-1 advantage. Vyse retired six straight hitters to start the game and faced the minimum through three after getting an inning-ending double play before Clark pulled even with a four-run fifth.

Senior Brayden Hollinrake (Goffstown, N.H.) and junior Michael Salzillo (Johnston, R.I.) singled to start the frame, and Fournier cranked a three-run homer to left, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Hewett kept the inning going with a two-out double to center, and Mariani followed with an RBI single to left center to make it 5-5. The Beavers wasted little time responding, though, as Drazka led off with a single, stole second and scored on Valente's single to left, which was followed by a two-run blast by Teator to regain an 8-5 advantage.

Vyse retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, and Babson broke the game open, scoring four times with two outs in the bottom of the frame. Cushner and D'Avanzo recorded back-to-back RBI singles, Hvozdovic brought home another run with an infield single, and sophomore Colin Chou (Warren, N.J.) worked a six-pitch walk to force in D'Avanzo, extending the lead to 12-5.

The Beavers loaded the bases thanks to three straight walks to begin the seventh and tacked on two more insurance runs as both Drazka and Valente scored on wild pitches.

First-year Tyler Hansen (East Hampton, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in 0.2 innings.

Babson will now face second-seeded Wheaton on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Norton, Mass.

Game 2- No. 5 Springfield 11, No. 4 MIT 12- Final

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Dalton Chi hit a three-run home run in the second inning and a grand slam in the fifth inning to power the No. 4-seeded MIT baseball team to a 12-11 victory over No. 5-seeded Springfield College in the first round of the 2026 NEWMAC Baseball Championship on Tuesday at Archie Allen Field.

With the victory, MIT will advance to play at top-seeded Salve Regina on Friday at 3:00 PM.

Chi and Zev Moore helped MIT score five runs in the opening innings, as a back-and-forth start saw the Engineers take a 5-4 lead after just two innings of play. Moore homered in the bottom of the first, but Springfield jumped to a 4-1 lead with four runs in the top of the second.

With MIT trailing in the second inning, Chi took the third pitch he saw over the wall with Owen Malone and John Spivey on base to tie the contest at 4-4. Zev Moore followed Chi with a single and John Dwyer doubled before Moore scored on an odd sacrifice fly and foul out to right saw Dwyer cut down at home plate. MIT carried the 5-4 lead into the fifth inning.

Springfield tied the game 5-5 on the strength of a Jack Dunaisky RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. MIT responded with a six-run bottom of the fifth to move ahead 11-5. Del Pino plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Jack Finnegan drove in a run with an RBI single, but the big blast in the fifth came off the bat of Chi, as the first-year hit his first career grand slam to give MIT a six-run lead.

Springfield got two runs back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring on a pair of bases-loaded walks to make the score 11-7.

The contest would move to the eighth inning before MIT added some insurance. Chi opened the inning with a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Zev Moore to make the score 12-7. MIT's final run would prove to be critical as the game moved to the ninth inning.

Chase Rubin got the first batter to fly out to left to open the ninth, but six straight Springfield batters reached base to follow as the Pride took advantage of three hits and three MIT errors to close the gap to one run. The final Springfield run scored on an RBI single by Ryan Duffy, as he reached base while scoring Adam Crocker and moving Kyle Mitchell to third. However, with one out and the tying run on third base, Rubin got Tyler Casey to ground into a game-ending double play.

Rubin and starter Matthew Spenner split the pitching duties to lead MIT to the win. Spenner covered the first 4.2 innings, striking out five and walking five while giving up five runs and five hits over 90 pitches. Rubin got the win, pitching the final 4.1 innings.

Chi finished the day 3-for-5 with a career-high seven RBIs and three runs scored. He was one of five Engineers with multiple hits, along with Zev MooreJames DempseyOwen Malone and Finnegan. Dempsey and Chi both hit triples in the contest.

Chi leads MIT with seven home runs and a .615 slugging percentage on the season. His seven RBIs were the most for an MIT first-year since teammate John Spivey recorded eight RBIs in a game last season.

The first pitch between MIT and Salve Regina is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Friday. The teams will meet in the postseason for the second straight year. Salve topped the Engineers in last year's NEWMAC Championship to win the title.
