Coast Guard's Sean Burns Awarded NEFW/Grinold Chapter Gold Helmet Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – U.S. Coast Guard Academy quarterback Sean Burns is this week’s DII/DIII recipient of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award,  presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Coast Guard has now received the award in two out of the first three weeks, as Harrison Hensley was awarded the first gold helmet of the season.

Burns, from Absecon, N.J., and a graduate of Holy Spirit High School and the Naval Academy Prep School, tied the school record with six touchdown passes in a wild 92-60 win over Nichols. Burns finished 20-of-24 passing for 384 yards, adding seven carries for 69 yards and a score on the ground. His scoring strikes were 13, 29, 24, 59, 52, and 17 yards, and he also ran for a 41-yard touchdown.

For the eleventh straight year, the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II, and Division III institutions throughout New England. The awards will be presented at the NEFW Captains and Awards Banquet on December 11, at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center.
