Westwood, Mass. – The NEWMAC has released its Men's Lacrosse postseason awards, as announced by the conference on Wednesday morning. The awards are determined by the conference's eight coaches following the conclusion of regular season play.
Attack
Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) of Babson College was voted NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate
Alex Fascilla (Huntington, N.Y.) earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Babson’s
Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Springfield College's
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) share Rookie of the Year honors. The Babson coaching staff was voted Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.
Rainville headlines the first team selections at the attack position and is joined by Emerson College’s
Jack Burns (Clarksville, Md.) and MIT’s
Health Nilsen (Cincinnati, Ohio). Babson’s
Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.), MIT’s
Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) and Springfield’s
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) fill out the midfield selections. Babson’s
Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) and
Chip Quinn (Catonsville, Md.) were awarded a spot at defender, as was Springfield’s
Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.). Babson’s
Gavin Bailey (Hinsdale, Ill.) was selected as a long stick midfielder, while MIT’s
Teague Rice (Suffern, N.Y.) garnered the accolade as a short stick defender. Babson’s
James Turco (Woodbury, N.Y.) is the face off specialist selection, while teammate and Defensive Player of the Year, Alex Fascilla, rounds out the first team selections in the goalkeeper position.
Rooney and Degnan headline the second team attack selections, and are joined by Emerson's
Birk Swan (Palos Verdes, Calif.). Swan’s teammate
Nicholas Fulgione (North Andover, Mass.) made the team as a midfielder, along with MIT’s
Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) and Salve Regina University’s
Max Beauchamp (Saunderstown, R.I.). MIT placed two in the second team defender slot,
Luke Chapman (Houston, Texas) and
Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.). Wheaton College’s
Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) is the last defender selection. Springfield’s
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) was honored as a long stick midfielder, while teammate
Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) earned the nod as a short stick defender, along with Babson’s
Ford Carney (Garden City, N.Y.). The final face off specialist spot was awarded to
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Emerson’s
Malcolm McGrath (Ridgefield, Conn.) wraps up the selections at the goalkeeper spot.
Athlete of the Year- Jared Rainville (GS., A), Babson College
Jared Rainville led the conference with 29 goals in conference play, and 74 overall, breaking the Babson record for goals in a season. His 98 points overall, and 38 points in conference play, were also good for first in the NEWMAC. He tacked on nine assists in league play, and 24 overall. The attack is tied for fourth in the nation in goals per game with 4.11. He is one of just three Babson players to surpass 60 goals and 80 points in a season. Rainville helped the Beavers to an undefeated league record, a NEWMAC title, and was named the NEWMAC Championship Most Outstanding Player.
Defensive Player of the Year – Alex Fascilla (Jr., GK), Babson College
Alex Fascilla leads the league with an 8.76 goals against average, which lowered to 8.34 in league play. His .624 save percentage is good for eighth in the nation. His .602 save percentage in league play was also tops in the NEWMAC. The goalkeeper is also second in the league in total saves with 196. Fascilla helped the Beavers to an undefeated league record, and the NEWMAC title.
Co-Rookie of the Year- Jake Degnan (Fr., A), Springfield College
Jake Degnan was third in the league with 45 goals, and second with 23 goals in conference play. His goal total led all NEWMAC rookies. He is also in the top-ten in points, with 54, 28 of which came in league play. Degnan helped the Pride to the No. 2 seed in the NEWMAC Championship.
Co-Rookie of the Year- Seamus Rooney (Fr., A), Babson College
Rooney opened his rookie campaign with at least three points in the first six games, and tallied multiple goals in five conference starts. He totaled 31 goals overall, which placed him in the top 10 in the NEWMAC. The rookie also tacked on 11 assists. Despite missing the final two games due to injury, his 42 points are the most by a Babson rookie since 2010. The first year helped the Beavers to an undefeated league record.
Coaching Staff of the Year – Babson College
Babson went 7-0 in league play, and 15-3 overall. They would secure the top seed in the NEWMAC Championship and went on to win their second consecutive NEWMAC title. The Beavers are currently ranked 10
th in the USILA poll and will make their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Babson is under the direction of head coach
