NEWMAC Announces Football 25 Year All-NEWMAC Team
NEWMAC 25-Year Anniversary Information
WESTWOOD, MASS. - The NEWMAC is thrilled to announce the Football 25 Year All-NEWMAC Team in recognition of the conference's historic 25th Anniversary. A total of 23 student-athletes comprised the team and were voted on by the membership, announced by the conference office.
The NEWMAC celebrated its inaugural football season in 2017 and since then five institutions saw student-athletes honored on this celebratory team. Springfield College led the way with seven honorees, MIT and WPI were close behind with six, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy along with Norwich University each being represented by two athletes of their own.
Among the honorees are four Offensive Athletes of the Year, three Defensive Athletes of the Year, and three Special Teams Athletes of the Year. In addition to these accolades are five student-athletes who were named All-American and seven who were named All-Region.
Retired U.S. Merchant Marine Academy head coach, Mike Toop was voted the top football coach in NEWMAC football history. Toop coached as USMMA for 17 seasons prior to retiring at the end of the 2021 season. During his time with the NEWMAC, Toop led the Mariners to two New England Bowl Championship Titles representing the conference.
The Football 25 Year All-NEWMAC Team was voted on by current football coaches and sports information directors at the conference's 11 member institutions. Voters were asked to rank student-athletes and were not allowed to vote for members or coaches from their own institution. To be eligible for the 25th anniversary team, student-athletes must have been recognized on the NEWMAC First-Team All-Conference team at least twice, and/or earned Athlete or Defensive Player of the Year honors. Coaches must have coached in the NEWMAC for a minimum of 10 seasons.
The NEWMAC was established in 1998, when the former New England Women's 8 Conference (NEW 8) voted to begin sponsoring conference play and championships for men. At this time, the conference expanded its membership to include Springfield College and the United States Coast Guard Academy, while Emerson College became the 11th full-time member of the conference on July 1, 2013. Salve Regina University will become the conferences 12th core member, effective on June 1, 2023.
