Merchant Marine's Blankenship, Mustain and MIT's Wright Named NEWMAC Football Athletes of the Week 9/27/2021 12:00:00 AM NEWMAC Football Offensive Athlete of the Week Ian Blankenship, Merchant Marine (Sr., QB – McRae, Ga.) The senior had his hand in six of the Mariners' eight touchdowns on Saturday in their 56-7 home win over Kean University that improved their record to a perfect 3-0 to start the season. Blankenship rushed for two touchdowns and passed four. He amassed 253 passing yards on just 6-of-8 attempts (505.7 passer efficiency), while also leading all players in the game on the ground with 84 yards on nine carries. NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week C.J. Mustain, Merchant Marine (Jr., DL – Oro Valley, Ariz.) The junior recorded a team-best nine tackles (seven solo and two assisted) in the Mariners' 56-7 victory over Kean University in their home-opener this past Saturday to help them move to 3-0 on the season. Mustain had 4.5 tackles for losses including 3.5 sacks, one of which forced a fumble in the Cougars' territory that USMMA recovered and scored on a few plays later. Mustain also broke-up one pass and had one quarterback hurry on the afternoon. NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week Mark Wright, MIT (Gr., K – Fort Worth, Texas) In a 27-0 road shutout, the graduate student was a perfect 2-for-2 in field goal attempts, along with a 3-for-3 performance in extra point attempts to account for nine points. Wright converted field goals of 31 and 35 yards in the victory.
