MIT Women's Cross Country Garners 10th Straight NEWMAC Title

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women's cross country team won its 10th straight NEWMAC title in championship action held at Smith College on Saturday afternoon.
The Engineers finished with runners in the top five spots for an overall score of 15 points. Wellesley College followed in second place with 69 points, while third place Coast Guard (89 points), fourth place Smith College (139 points) and fifth place WPI (141 points) rounded out the top five. Wheaton College (150 points) took sixth, followed by Clark (167 points) in seventh, Springfield College (210 points) in eighth, Mount Holyoke College (272 points) in ninth, Emerson College (286 points) in tenth and Babson College (290 points) in eleventh.
MIT freshman Megan McCandless was named NEWMAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year and Rookie of the Year for her first place time of 18:17. Mary Eccles of MIT was runner-up in 18:41, while fellow Engineer Maryann Gong took third in 18:42. Christina Wicker (18:46) and Leandra Zimmermann (18:54) rounded out the top five for MIT.
