MIT Claims 18th Consecutive NEWMAC Men’s Cross Country Championship

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year Colin Godwin (Cary, N.C.), MIT ran to the 18th consecutive NEWMAC Cross Country Championship in program history on Saturday at Franklin Park.
MIT swept the top-three places and took eight of the top-ten spots en route to an overall score of 17. WPI took second with 49 points, while the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (82 points) finished in third, Babson College (127 points) took fourth and Springfield College (146 points) took fifth. Sixth place Clark University (157 points), seventh place Wheaton College (214 points) and eighth place Emerson College (225 points) rounded out the field.
Godwin led the MIT sweep of the top-three, taking first in 25:35. Junior Rory Beyer (San Mateo, Calif) was the next to the line, taking runner-up honors with a time of 25:37. MIT first year Daniel Weiss (Naperville, Ill.) then earned NEWMAC Rookie of the Year as the top-finisher among first year runners, finishing third with a time of 25:39.
WPI graduate student Ryan Moran (Pembroke, Mass.) broke the string of MIT runners with his fourth place finish in 25:40. WPI would go on to add another top-ten time as junior Austin Scott (Waddington, N.Y.) took seventh in 25:48.
The remainder of the top-ten belonged to MIT, as first year Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio) and junior Austin Deyo (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished in fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 25:40 and 25:47. MIT sophomores Cooper Sloan (Sunnyvale, Calif.), Nicholas Waltman (Lexington, Ky.) and Alex Knoedler (Canon City, Colo.) swept places eight through ten, with Sloan recording a time of 25:59, while Waltman clocked in at 26:04 and Knoedler finished in 26:14.
Springfield's Johnny O'Hanlon (Haworth, N.J.) went on to take 11th place with a time of 26:20 before WPI earned its next top-14 finish when sophomore Justin Trott (North Hampton, N.H.) recorded a time of 26:30 to take 12th. Coast Guard's Gilliam Hill (Elon, N.C.) and WPI's Michael Brady (Medway, Mass.) rounded out the top-14 with times of 26:32 and 26:34, respectively.
The top-14 finishers in Sunday's eight-kilometer NEWMAC Men's Cross Country Championship earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors.
