NEWMAC Announces 2013 Cross Country Postseason Awards
BOSTON, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced the 2013 Cross Country Coaches of the Year and Sportsmanship Award recipients on Tuesday, following the conference championship meet over the weekend. After leading the MIT women to their seventh-straight NEWMAC title, Halston Taylor was voted as the women's Coach of the Year. Ethan Brown of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy earned Men's Coach of the Year honors. The Coast Guard Academy men and Wellesley College women received the NEWMAC Sportsmanship awards.
At the NEWMAC championship meet at Franklin Park on Sunday afternoon, MIT swept the Runner and Rookie of the Year awards, while taking home both team titles for the seventh year in a row. Roy Wedge (Lawrence, Kan.) and Elaine McVay (San Ramon, Calif.) were named the men's and women's Runner of the Year. Rory Beyer (San Mateo, Calif.) was selected as the men's Rookie of the Year, as the top first-year finisher, while Maryann Gong (Livermore, Calif.) was similarly recognized in the women's race.
Brown led the Coast Guard men to a second-place finish, their highest showing in three years, while landing five runners on the NEWMAC All-Conference team.
All-Conference accolades were handed out on Sunday, going to the top 14 finishers in the championship for each gender.
