NORTON, Mass. – Third-seeded Wheaton College advanced to its seventh-straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal round on Wednesday evening at the Clark Tennis Courts with a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Springfield College in the quarterfinal round of tournament play.
The Lyons (10-2, 6-2 NEWMAC) will square off against #2 Wellesley College (8-2, 7-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday, October 26 at 3 p.m. in Wellesley, Mass. The winner of Saturday's match will play the winner of #4 Babson (9-5, 5-3 NEWMAC) and #1 MIT (9-0, 8-0 NEWMAC) on Sunday, October 27 at Wellesley College at 1 p.m. The Beavers defeated Mount Holyoke College, 6-0, earlier today to advance to the semifinal round for the fourth-straight season.
Wheaton co-captains Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and Lyndsay Cooke(Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) breezed to an 8-0 victory at No.1 doubles over Springfield freshmen Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) to push the Lyons ahead early, 1-0.
Senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) turned away sophomores Melanie Thulin (Manchester, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn./Wamogo Regional) by an 8-3 score at No.2 and seniors Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) defeated senior Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn./Fishers Island) and junior Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass./Emerson College), 8-1, at No.3 to take a commanding 3-0 lead headed into singles play.
At No.2 singles, Cooke cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Streimer and Brazell completed the victory for Wheaton versus Foster winning at No.4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. NEWMAC Tournament matches are played to decision.
Before play was suspended, Marlowe led by a 6-0, 5-1 score at No.1 singles over London, while Bell, Crom and sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) all claimed set one victories in their respective matches.
