NEWMAC Announces 2018 Women's Soccer Postseason Awards

NEWMAC Announces 2018 Women's Soccer Postseason Awards

WESTWOOD, Mass. - After another season of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition, the league announced the 2018 Women's Soccer All-Conference and Postseason awards. MIT earned three major awards, while Springfield garnered one.

MIT junior midfielder Sophia Struckman was named the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Year. Scoring in 11 games for the Engineers' offense this season, Struckman ranks second in the conference in goals with 14. MIT senior defender Hailey Nichols was recognized as the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year, earning the honor for the second straight year. While aiding in MIT's 10 shutouts so far this season, Nichols also chipped in four goals and one assist.

Springfield first-year midfielder Kaleigh Dale was tabbed the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year, after an impressive freshman season. Scoring a hat-trick three times this season, the newcomer led the conference in goals with 17 and in points with 38. After leading the Engineers to a regular season title and its second consecutive NEWMAC Championship crown, MIT's Head Coach Martin Desmarais was named the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year for the fifth-time in his career.

The NEWMAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Team consists of a first team and a second team of 13 individuals that are voted on by the eleven women's soccer coaches from the conference. The 2018 honorees are listed below.

Eleven women's soccer players are also being recognized to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.
