NEWMAC Announces 2018 Football Postseason Honors

WESTWOOD, Mass. - With the conclusion of the second season of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, the league announced the 2018 Football All-Conference and Postseason honors on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to First and Second All-Conference teams, the NEWMAC honors an Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Athlete of the Year along with Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year.

After leading MIT to a NEWMAC crown and a berth to the NCAA Tournament, senior quarterback Udgam Goyal was named the Offensive Athlete of the Year. For the Engineers, Goyal led the conference with 18 passing touchdowns and recorded a 57% pass completion rate on the season. Springfield's Nick Giorgio was selected as the Defensive Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. The senior defenseman led the conference with 24.5 tackles for a loss for 104 yards and sacks with 12.5.

For the second straight year, WPI's Spencer Herrington was named Special Teams Athlete of the Year, as the senior took over both kicking and punting duties for the Engineers this season. Herrington led the league with 12 field goals made in 15 attempts, including being a perfect 30-for-30 in extra point attempts, and 17 punts within the 20-yard line.

MIT Head Coach Brian Bubna was named the Coach of the Year, after leading the Engineers to a NEWMAC title and an At-Large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In his first season, Bubna led the Engineers to a 6-1 conference and 9-1 overall record.

Earning Co-Rookie of the Year honors this season are Maine Maritime's Terrell Thomas and Norwich's Lavontae Decius. Thomas finished the season with 47 tackles, while Decius caught 32 passes and added three touchdowns.

With their major honors, Goyal, Giorgio and Herrington have earned an automatic place on First Team All-Conference. The remaining 57 All-Conference honorees for 2018 are listed below.

Eight football student-athletes were also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.
