Smith was outstanding in key spots for Springfield as it prevailed over WPI, 17-14, in a matchup of the two preseason favorites in the conference. The sophomore tallied two tackles, had a critical first-half interception that he returned 23 yards, and blocked the potentially game-tying field goal with just 34 seconds remaining to preserve the victory. Smith anchored a defensive unit that limited WPI to just 298 yards of offense, over 100 less than its season average.

NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week

Cole Austin, Coast Guard (Sr., K/FS – Flower Mound, Texas)

Austin had big day kicking a career-high three field goals and also making the game saving tackle in the Bears thrilling 38-35 win over Norwich to capture the Mug. Austin would miss a 23-yard field goal on the Bears first possession, but he would then convert three field goals in the second quarter from 21, 33 and 39 yards to give the Bears a 9-7 lead. He would make all three PAT's in the game. His biggest moment however came after the Bears took the lead with nine seconds left on the ensuing kickoff he was part of the game saving tackle at the Bear 40 to preserve the win.
