AUSTIN, Texas (June 5) - MIT sophomore outfielder Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This program honors the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Johnston, who owns a perfect 5.0 GPA as a physics major, is being recognized for the first time as an Academic All-American. Appearing in 23 games this season, Johnston finished with a team-leading seven home runs as he had a pair of two-homer performances. He hit .250 with 16 runs scored, 19 runs batted in and four doubles. Johnston also had a .522 slugging percentage and recorded multiple hits in seven games.
In his rookie season in 2017, he was named to the All-Region Team and was also recognized as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and a NEWMAC Second Team All-Conference player.
