WACBA Honors WPI Associate AD Ann McCarron with Oroszko Courage Award

WACBA Honors WPI Associate AD Ann McCarron with Oroszko Courage Award

This release is courtesy of WPI Sports Information.

WORCESTER — Ann McCarron and Patrick Oroszko worked for several years in college athletics at schools in the same conference and just a couple miles apart in the same city, but McCarron, an associate athletic director at WPI, and Oroszko, a former assistant basketball coach Clark, met for the first time three years ago when they bumped into each other while both going through treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

McCarron was battling breast cancer for the second time. Oroszko had recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

McCarron's wife, Janet McGuiggan, a Worcester district court judge, and Oroszko's wife, Courtney, an assistant district attorney at the time, who both accompanied their beloved spouses to Dana-Farber that day, knew each other from work and made the introductions.

"I'll never forget the day I met him," McCarron said. "He went up for his scans, and I went for mine, and Courtney and Janet chatted about the process and what stage it was at. After that, we followed each other while we were in treatment. I always knew how he was doing through Janet and Courtney's connection, and I heard from other people how courageous he was."

Oroszko, who also played basketball at Clark and was the director of student recruitment for the university's graduate school, passed away in June 2016 after a dauntless eight-month battle.

In 2017, the Worcester Area College Basketball Association established the Patrick Oroszko Courage Award to recognize someone who has overcome obstacles, displays courage and has a love for Worcester basketball.

McCarron, a two-time breast cancer survivor, is this year's recipient.

"I'm honored to be a recipient of Pat's award," McCarron said while fighting back tears. "I'm blessed."

Past winners of the Oroszko award were the late Bill Gibbons Sr. and former Quinsigamond Community College and current Anna Maria basketball player Johnny Dombrowski.

McCarron will receive her award at the annual WACBA banquet April 18 at WPI's Alden Hall.

"She embodies everything the award stands for," said Courtney Oroszko, who will present the award to McCarron. "She's overcome all these obstacles that have been thrown in front of her and every time I saw her, no matter how sick she was or how hard the treatments were, she always had a smile on her face, always had a good attitude. She embodied everything we wanted to with this award, the same as Pat, and she's an unbelievable example of that."

McCarron grew up in Quincy and played basketball at Plymouth State, where she later served as an assistant basketball coach.

She spent 15 years at Assumption as the recreational sports director/facility manager. In her nine years as an associate AD at WPI, McCarron has overseen club sports, facilities, summer camps and student-athlete programming and services. While working events, she was a welcoming and familiar face at Harrington Auditorium for WPI men's and women's basketball games.

In 2014, she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer and endured her first series of treatments. Eighteen months later, she learned the cancer had metastasized to her liver.

"I was told the metastasized breast cancer was treatable, but not curable," McCarron said, "and that I would be on chemotherapy for the rest of my life. Those were hard words to hear."

Her biggest fear was that she would not see her son, Quinn, graduate from high school.

For the next year and a half, McCarron went through chemotherapy and immunotherapy at Dana-Farber while hardly missing a day of work.

The immunotherapy drug affected her joints and made them swell. It depleted her adrenal gland and made her weak. That made the walk from the WPI garage to her office longer, but she was more than happy to do it. She lost weight and her gorgeous dark-brown curly hair, but never her spirit.

"WPI was so supportive of me," McCarron said. "I had wonderful support. It's a great place to work. Being able to interact and move around, it helped."

Through it all, McCarron missed work twice while being hospitalized and every third Friday during those 18 months she was having treatment.

"I'm thrilled Ann is receiving this award," WPI women's basketball coach and WACBA president Cherise Galasso said. "She has certainly been an inspiration to those of us who know her and has been a true warrior throughout her battle, always positive and giving to others regardless of what she was going through. She is also a huge advocate for Central Mass. basketball, attending many games. It's a perfect match for her to be recognized by the Oroszko family."

This month will mark two years since McCarron had her last treatment.

"I'm going to say I'm in remission because I haven't been in treatment, so yay!" McCarron said. "Through some miracle, prayers, medicine, that immunotherapy drug and a little luck of the Irish, as I always say, I've been blessed, and I'm still here."

Quinn, a senior at St. John's High, graduates in May. He has narrowed his college choices to WPI, Catholic, UMass, Rhode Island and American, and spent the last couple weeks cheering on his favorite college basketball team, Duke, in the NCAA Tournament.

McCarron's power port is still in place, and she goes for scans at Dana-Farber every three months.

"I'm feeling great and every three months I walk in there with a positive attitude," McCarron said. "The journey is not over. I know how quickly tides can change. I'm just the lucky one, but there is hope for other people who are going through cancer. I'm blessed that I'm here. Three friends who were going through treatment at the same time (including Oroszko and Gibbons Sr.) are not, and that is heartbreaking."

After Oroszko passed, McCarron and McGuiggan attended a Clark basketball game that honored Oroszko and, along with Quinn, loaded some of his old toys in a red wagon, wheeled them to the Oroszkos' home, and gave them to Courtney and Pat's children, Allison and Ryan.

"It was like Santa came," said Courtney Oroszko, who is now assistant clerk magistrate at Worcester Superior Court. "That's another thing that goes to Ann's character. In the midst of everything, she always thinks of other people and trying to do things to make other people's lives better when she was going through this really terrible thing herself."

Allison, 6, and Ryan, who will turn 4 in June, named their new dog Clark. Courtney is also a Clark graduate.

Last month, McCarron ran, well, "walked/jogged," she said, the Guinness Celtic 5K, and, never suppressing her competitive drive, "sprinted to the finish line," she added with a laugh. There will be many more celebrations ahead — two years without treatment, Quinn's graduation, and hers and McGuiggan's three-year wedding anniversary in June.

"Cancer changed my life," McCarron said. "It taught me how to live, how to cherish every moment."
